Abstract
Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) is caused by a deficiency of antidiuretic hormone(ADH) released from the posterior pituitary gland due to a range of causes. We report a rare case of CDI associated with pituitary tumor. A 61 year-old male patient was admitted due to polyuria and polydipsia for about one month. CDI was diagnosed by the water deprivation test. Sella magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 1.3 cm sized pituitary tumor with hemorrhage. He had no neurological defects. A thorough hormonal evaluation demonstrated no evidence of hormonal hypersecretion or hypopituitarism, except ADH deficiency and secondary hypothyroidism which was transient for about two weeks. Conservative management with desmopressin improved the patient¡¯s symptoms and urine osmolarity. Taking into consideration all the aforementioned facts, pituitary surgery was not performed. After 3 months, a repeat MRI study showed decreased tumor size.
